11 September 2010

Phew!  Most of the day in the daff patch.  Winter soft muscles are complaining.  A lovely mild spring day with no wind.  Some flowering in the paddock below

At left is Alamo – always bright and early;  Cassata an early split corona;  Commanding a reliable strong growing trumpet daffodil just coming into flower.

Very busy preparing for the Dunedin Horticultural Society’s show in Dunedin this weekend.  Hope the weather prediction is wrong!

Just enough time to take a quick photo of the paddock.  A great many varieties coming into bloom and with only one show this week I have picked for a sales display as well as entries in Dunedin.

19 September 2010

Well the weather man got it right.  Managed to get entries in on Friday night and Saturday morning and stayed to help steward the show as the judge couldn’t make it from Invercargill due to the heavy snow.  Those who would normally steward were judging.  Planned to stay and look at the show before travelling home but stepped outside and it was snowing heavily so I bolted for home, an hour’s drive away.  Now I have to get back to pick everything up??????

36 Show beds in the snow.jpg

Sunday morning showing the snow on the daff beds.  Oh well, they are only flowers and there are two weeks until the next local shows.  Can’t see many being any use for the South Island National at Te Anau next weekend.  Of more concern are the poor lambs as we are in the middle of lambing.  I have a feeling my budget for buying new daffodils will be very restrained this season!!

20 September 2010

Below are some pics from the Dunedin Spring Show.  Trophies were well shared among the exhibitors.  I managed a ‘NAS’ (not as schedule) – collection of 6 daffs from at least 3 divisions – rushed in my selection the day before and forgot to make certain and recheck the schedule and my entry - I only had 2 divisions covered – doh!!!  Snow is cleared from all but the hills but still bitterly cold.

45 Alan Paterson Memorial Trophy.jpg

Left to right:  Kiwi Magic – quite pleased with this one as I grabbed it last thing on Friday morning and it’s not too bad – got 1st;  This lovely vase of Kiwi Solstice really took me eye.  It was exhibited by a novice grower and I sure wish this variety would form well like this for me!;  I’m especially thrilled to have received this trophy donated in memory of the late Mr Alan Paterson, a wonderful gentleman who loved his minis.  It is for the premier vase of miniatures

Left to right:  My collection of 9 red cups won the H T Trevena Trophy – now that was a surprise!  Varieties are: top 3 Loch Loyal, middle at left and right Rheban Red; top flower is a very neat Milemcro; bottom left and right Cameo Flush with Nougat at top;  Mercervale Daffodils trade stand; My collection of 9 minis won the Mrs C G Robinson Cup – flowers are: top Snipe, middle Kokopelli and bottom left and right Xit and centre is Jumblie
