Kohuhu or Black Matipo This well known native species is a small evergreen tree growing to around 10m. Densely foliaged it has delightful crinkly leaves in rich green, often speckly with browns and reds especially in the open. Small, dark, reddish-purple flowers announce themselves at night with their strong fragrance. Very versatile, hardy native from which many wonderful selected forms have derived. If you have a windy site, this often performs better than some of the selected forms when wanting shelter. On our property the faster growing selections can tend to blow over in our strong winds - not these though!
